Malaysia is one of the most pleasant, hassle-free countries to visit in southeast Asia. It''s buoyant and wealthy, and has moved towards a pluralist culture based on a vibrant and interesting fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs.

Most visitors to Malaysia stick to the insane headlong rush of Kuala Lumpur, the colonially soothing Cameron Highlands Hill Station or the hedonistic torpor of Langkawi. However, the island of East Malaysia offers spectacular wildlife, longhouses and the awe-inspiring Mt Kinabalu.

Malaysia''s love of Western-style industrialisation is abundantly clear in its big cities. Aside from the gleaming glass of the 21st Century, though, Malaysia boasts some of the most superb beaches, mountains and national parks in Asia.

The tsunami that hit the northern Malaysian coast on 26 December has so far claimed around 70 lives. Although Malaysia has not been as severely affected as other countries in the region, tidal waves nonetheless caused havoc leaving substantial damage on the resort island of Penang and to coastal villages in Perak, Kedah and Perlis in the north of the country. While the clean-up has been swift and almost all services have resumed, it is still advisable to check accommodation and transfers prior to arrival in Malaysia.

Several other nations across a wide area around the Bay of Bengal have been hit by the tragedy, most notably Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. The deadly tsunami was triggered by a massive underwater earthquake 100km (60 mi) north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Travellers are urged to delay visiting affected areas, and to seek advice from their local governments prior to travel in the next few weeks.
